About Magager

Over half a century transforming agricultural needs into engineering solutions.

Magager Agricultural and Industrial Machinery was founded in the 1960s and is located in Almofala de Baixo, Aguda, in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, in the centre of Portugal. We are a family-owned company, now in its second generation, with deep roots in rural life and in the engineering of practical solutions for agriculture and industry.

Who We Are Today

From the very beginning, our mission has been clear and demanding: to supply agricultural equipment of exceptional quality, capable of meeting the real needs of farmers, cooperatives, and professional operators.

As the world has changed, so have the needs of our clients. For that reason, we expanded our product offering to include:

  • Tools and equipment for agriculture and forestry;
  • Welding and metalworking equipment;
  • Construction equipment;
  • Water pumps and irrigation solutions;
  • Electrical and industrial equipment for multiple applications.

Under our registered brand AGER, we manufacture a wide range of essential equipment for both agricultural and industrial use.

The Origins of Magager

The origins of Magager trace back to the period before the 1930s, in a small rural location called Lage, in central Portugal. This would become the reference point and “heart and soul” of what our company is today.

As a child, our founder spent his days in places with almost mythical names — such as “Quinta da Arranhada” and “Lapa do Texugo” — ensuring that the donkey never stopped rotating the water wheel that kept the irrigation system running. These mechanisms were already the main work of his father, a blacksmith by trade, responsible for installing and maintaining irrigation systems across the region.

When water stopped flowing to the distant family vegetable garden, it was common to find both the donkey resting and the young boy asleep under the shade of the rocky shelter known as the “badger’s cave”, escaping the harsh summer heat.

The Legend of the Lapa do Texugo

It is said that this repeated combination of scorching sun, exhausted donkey, and stalled mechanism sparked in him the drive to create more efficient solutions. Years later, that intuition would lead to innovations that transformed irrigation practices across many farms in Portugal.

This is how the company António Marques Boavida was born, becoming a reference between the 1960s and 1980s not only in the region but across Portugal. The AGER brand was created, various irrigation pump models were patented, and a custom sealing system — praised for its exceptional durability — was developed.

At that time, when electricity was still scarce in rural areas, the market relied heavily on kerosene-powered irrigation pump groups. The first prototypes were built using motorcycle engines.

Later, the company became the exclusive representative in Portugal for ROTAX (Bombardier Group) and MAG (Charmilles Group) explosion engines — the same engines that powered iconic aircraft such as the Mirage jets.

Today, Magager and the AGER brand continue with the same philosophy: reliable, robust solutions built for real-world conditions.
